The exhibition of Ukrainian Baroque icons of the 17th–19th centuries from private collections presents the diversity of forms and subjects characteristic of national icon painting, highlighting its distinctive features as well as its aesthetic and stylistic specificity.
The uniqueness of Ukrainian sacred art of this period lies in the organic combination of Orthodox canon with folk tradition and Western European artistic influences (in particular, the impact of Dutch engraving). The artistic language of the time is marked by richness, allegorical depth, and at times—dramatic intensity and mysticism.
Icons of this era represent a new type of sanctity and a new image of the human being. In the Renaissance–Baroque period, smiles begin to appear on the faces of saints, infusing religious imagery with a sense of living human emotion.
